Dr Dermot Hudson chairman of UK KFA and Chairman of the British Group for the Study of the Juche Idea said that solidarity with the struggle of the south Korean people for independence and reunification is an important part of our work which we must not forget or neglect . Although it is the 40th anniversary of the Kwangju uprising and the subsequent massacre , this will not be mentioned in the mainstream media who will be silent on the subject.
Dr Hudson explained how US occupied south Korea and created a fascist puppet regime under Syngham Rhee . Later the Park Chung Hee fascist military regime came to power in south Korea with the backing of the US but in turn was replaced by another puppet regime , the regime of Chun Do Hwan in 1979 . Chun declared martial law on the 17th of May 1980 but the citizens of Kwangju city rose up .
The Kwangju uprising was a brave and heroic manifestation of the anti -fascist, anti- imperialist struggle of the south Korean popular masses and revolutionaries led by the Revolutionary Party for Reunification , the forerunner of the present Anti-Imperialist National Democratic Front of south Korea.
On the 22nd of May the spokesman of the Revolutionary Party for Reunification issued a statement to support the armed mass uprising of patriotic people in South Cheolla Province including Mokpo following Kwangju on May 18, denouncing the cruelty of the Chun Doo-hwan clique which declared the martial law.
The Kwangju uprising, which lasted 9 days , added a new chapter to the history of the struggle of the south Korean people for independence ,democracy and reunification . The participants of the Kwangju uprising showed remarkable courage and determination in the face of intense fascist repression by the south Korean puppet reactionaries and the Yankee imperialists.
The south Korean puppet regime and US imperialists responded with extreme violence killing up to 5,000 people . This proves south Korea is not a democracy .
Today we must support the struggle of the south Korean people for independence and reunification .
The representative of KFA Serbia said that ‘
However the plight of the Korean people might just come to an end soon as the numbers of protestors against US imperialism grows by the day, and Korean people will finally be able to join their brothers and sisters in the north in building their country independently in their own way. The DPRK has not, and will never bow down to imperialist demands of subordination of the whole of Korean people. The DPRK continues building its socialism and creating a society and country which takes care of its people and will continue doing so forever. In the DPRK a socialist society, where the needs of the Korean people are above demands of foreign imperialist powers, is maintained unlike in the south, and nobody will be able to change that. The DPRK stays on the path of anti-imperialism until the final victory is achieved and the US occupying forces are finally kicked out from south of Korea and the whole of Korean people are liberated from the chains of their colonial tendencies.
Let us remember forever the victims of the Gwangju Massacre,
The written contribution from comrade Lucas Rubio of Brazil stated that ”
Kwangju Uprising is an obscure episode in the history of South Korea when the puppet government of that state attacked the people in a brutal way, all who was fighting by a new and free order in Korea. The revolt must also be remembered as a heroic act by the Korean people who stood up in arms and in a large-scale popular demonstration against the unacceptable situation in which South Korea is until today.
The scene of the government attacking its own people is unthinkable in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, because the DPRK is a free and democratic nation where the people have power in their hands and where there is a real dictatorship of workers.
Shaun Pickford chairman of KFA Staffordshire and secretary general of the British Group for the Study of the Juche Idea said that’ Fundamentally in May 1980, the south Korean regime declared war on its own people, which demonstrates that the lack of legitimacy of the clique headquartered in Seoul. The coverage and bravely of the Kwangju insurgents of May 1980 will live on in the hearts and minds of the Korean people, in the continuing struggle for peace and the independent reunification on the Korean peninsula.”
Participants in the meeting denounced the ‘ National Security Law ‘ in south Korea . Dr Dermot Hudson also spoke about the Revolutionary Party for Reunification of south Korea and its proud successor the Anti-Imperialist National Democratic Front of south Korea .
The meeting resolved to support the struggle of the south Korean people for independence ,democracy and peaceful reunification.
Meeting concluded at 17.10 hours .
